The Tragedy of Two Patriotic Brothers

As the Emperor in the Ming Dynasty was fatuous, the imperial concubine of the Western Palace and Guo Zhang (the father of the Emperor’s concubine) secretly conspired with King Wa Ci to invade the country. The Zhong brothers rallied a group of righteous patriots to thwart the conspiracy on the sly. While the border was in a critical situation, the old general Zhong (Zhong Yu Jun) fell sick. He thus ordered his eldest son, Xiao Quan, to command the military affairs at the border. Guo Zhang and King Wa Ci seized the opportunity to invade the border. However, they were totally defeated by Xiao Quan and his troop. King Wa Ci then bade Guo Zhang to execute Xiao Quan to vent his anger. In the presence of the Emperor, Guo Zhang made malicious remarks against Xiao Quan and issued an imperial edict to order him back to the Capital. Xiao Quan was accused of putting the state in danger. The old general was ordered to execute his son with his own hands to manifest loyalty. Later, Xiao Quan’s younger brother, Xiao Yi, collected evidences to prove Guo Zhang’s conspiracy, and eventually brought the traitor to justice and took revenge for his elder brother.

Dik Ching Crashing Through Three Passes

During the northern Song dynasty, the Liao troops invaded the territory of Song. The vanguard of the Song army, Jiao Tinggui was tasked to cut paths through the mountains and build bridges across rivers to prepare for the onslaught on the enemy. Since he was not familiar with the terrain, he had no alternative but to ask local people for direction. In doing so, he fell into the premeditated trap laid by the wicked Grand Tutor Pang Hong and led Dik Ching and his army to the Shanshan state instead. Ching realized this fatal mistake after he had crashed through three passes and Princess Shuangyang of the Shanshan State led an army to meet him head-on. The princess however admired his martial arts and captured him by tricks. Later, they got married with the permission of the King of Shanshan State and lived a happy life.
One day, Tinggui brought Ching a letter from home, telling him that his mother was in prison. Ching was extremely grieved and conspired with Tinggui to get back his horse and silver spear from the princess and left the Shanshan State during the night. He planned to strike West Liao after joining his troops and then went to the rescue of his mother. When the princess discovered his departure, she immediately took some soldiers to give chase……

The Sounds of Battle

The states of Qin and Zhao were close allies during the Period of the Warring States. The state of Qi launched an attack against Zhao, taking advantage of the recent death of the king and his young successor. King Zhuang of Qin had his beloved concubine Luoxia negotiated with Princess Regent Cuibi from Zhao over lending troops; Qin proposed harsh conditions. Unwilling to send her younger brother to Qin as a hostage, Cuibi fell out with Luoxia. The princess decided to find a champion to save her country. A senior minister recommended his foster son Qingyun and his own son. Despite his civil and military talents, Qingyun disdained officialdom. The princess paid a personal visit to Qingyun and made him her general. Then she had secretly become engaged to Qingyun. After Qin and Zhao joined forces to repel the Qi army, King Zhuang of Qin threatened to take the crown prince of Zhao as a hostage unless Cuibi agreed to marry him. Qingyun was greatly depressed and lost heart, but he finally pulled himself together and rescued Cuibi. During a fierce battle with King Zhuang of Qin, Qingyun was about to be defeated. When he was encouraged by a love song played by Cuibi, he turned the tables. Eventually King Zhuang of Qin promised to make peace with Zhao. Qingyun and Cuibi were married.
