The Hong Kong Film Archive's Research Section occupies a crucial position within the Archive. Apart from special projects, other major areas of their work include:

   
1. Research for the Hong Kong Filmography series
  The Research Section is responsible for searching all available primary materials, including video/dvd/vcd copies, newspaper advertisements and articles, special souvenir brochures and handbills, scripts and stills etc. The work also involves meticulous checking of names and years of release among other minute details.
   
2. The Oral History Project
  The documentation of film history is a race against time. The Archive has been conducting extensive interviews with veteran filmmakers. The video-taped records (and transcripts) are valuable documentations of first-hand personal stories. The number of film personalities interviewed is now well over 300.
   
3. Compilation of Research Files
  Newspaper clippings and all other kinds of printed materials are compiled into research files to ensure the Archive's ongoing collection of information.

1. Hong Kong Filmography (1914-2010)

  For reference purpose, we have compiled a Hong Kong filmography (up till 2010). We welcome your advice on any possible errors or omissions in the database. Some film historians have credited Stealing a Roast Duck (1909/1912) as the first Hong Kong fiction film. It was produced by Benjamin Brodsky's Shanghai-based production company, directed by Leung Siu-po/Liang Shaopo from Hong Kong and filmed entirely in Hong Kong.
   
2. Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Films of the 1950s and 1960s

  Cantonese opera has always been closely related to Hong Kong cinema and Cantonese opera film was one of the major genres in the 1950s and 1960s. For reference purpose, we have compiled a filmography listing "authentic" opera films and costume musicals. It is interesting to note that only 4 Cantonese opera films have been produced since the end of the 1960s, including Laugh in the Sleeve (1975, Lee Tit), Princess Chang Ping (1976, John Woo), The Legend of Purple Hairpin (1977, Lee Tit) and The Legend of Lee Heung Kwan (1990, Chor Yuen). The filmography is in Chinese only.
