A Roundtrip Crossing the East-West Divide

Is it American jazz or Chinese rock? Is it electronic music or an acoustic performance? In fact, trying to categorise the collaboration between Wu Tong, Todd Reynolds, David Cossin and Evan Ziporyn would be to distort what they create - which is beyond the boundaries of any musical tradition. Or, rather, an amalgam of the world's best music.

Wu is one of the world's finest players of the sheng, a Chinese traditional instrument. A longstanding member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, Wu has made his debut as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Singapore Symphony Orchestra and London Sinfonietta in the past 18 months. But in his native Beijing, Wu was the founding member and lead singer of the rock band Lunhui (Again). Reynolds, a fellow Silk Road Ensemble artist, has been hailed by The New Yorker as the "reigning classical/jazz violinist" of that ultimate cultural capital, and has collaborated with names such as Betty Buckley, Steve Coleman, Joe Jackson and Wayne Shorter. Cossin was the percussion soloist of composer Tan Dun's Oscar-winning score, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Concerto for Water Percussion and Orchestra. Ziporyn is the Kenan Sahin Distinguished Professor of Music at the world-famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Put all four musicians on the same stage and they jam like there is no tomorrow. While Wu will breathe new life into Chinese folk melodies, such as Song of the Yellow River Boatman and Jasmine, together the group will create a totally fresh experience through improvisation. The first evening's performance is based on Chinese inspiration and is more a "Journey to the West". The second night's "Journey to the East" brings fresh perspectives to standard jazz tunes and classical works. In both, the chemistry between the quartet works magic,
leaving you entranced.
