Love
in a Fallen City is the best-known novel of Eileen
Chang. Unlike common love stories, Fan Liuyuan and Bai
Liusu are no Romeo and Juliet. Their love is in fact
more like a game of tug-of-war, both trying to win the
other side over. They are not sympathetic lovers but
enterprising gamblers. Based on the original script
by Chan Koon-chung, Fredric Mao and Edward Lam will
create a whole new version of the play. It is endowed
with a new point of view on the love game front and
the relationship between men and women through the powerful
mixture of story-telling, music and dance. |

Director
Fredric Mao employs the elements of music and dance
not simply to enhance the plot, but aims to further
develop a new performing style on the modern stage.
By using the role of a narrator / singer in the production,
Mao will direct his audience to see this love affair
from a different angle and with a contemporary touch.

In 1987,
the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre celebrated the Silver
Jubilee of the Hong Kong City Hall by staging the original
version of Love in a Fallen City. This time,
the Theatre also celebrates its 25th Anniversary by
staging the rewritten play. |
