"Love is only perfect when it has regretable imperfections,"
so goes the paradox which is elaborated to its fullest
in Eileen Chang's 18 Springs.
Perhaps precisely for this reason, it has always been
the most popular among her novels. Its depiction of a
man and a woman in love is miraculously detailed, revealing
its protoganists' characters and baring their souls along
the way. In the opinion of its faithful readers, it is
impossible to make the book into a movie - Chang has already
made her version on the pages. What Zuni's Mathias Woo
and Edward Lam attempt to do here is to invent a brand
new montage on stage, interpreting the ups and downs of
a romance, bringing it to an emotional finale. Co-produced
by Zuni and the National Theatre Company of China in their
first joint venture, its cast is headed by famous actress
René Liu, who has just played the part of Eileen
Chang in a television series based on the renowned writer's
life. Liu will sing four original songs written specially
for this occasion, each reflecting the mood of a season. |
