Mr. Lai Man-wai (1893-1953), was
one of the pioneers of Chinese cinema. He witnessed several
epochs of modern Chinese history: from the fall of the
Qing Dynasty to the birth of the Republic of China, and
from the War against Japanese invasion to the founding
of The People's Republic of China. Received westernised
education in Hong Kong, he spent his life as scriptwriter,
director, actor, cinematographer, producer and head of
studio, and produced a large number of quality films.
He nurtured talents and stars of the camera, and advocated
the use of advanced cinematography and film processing
technology. His passion, ingeniousness and pursuit of
the cinema of excellence made him the Father of Hong Kong
Cinema.
In celebration of his 110th birthday anniversary, Chung
Ying Theatre Company produces Action! Mr. Lai!
as a tribute to this colossus in the history of Chinese
film-making. |
